TAHITIAN PEARLS, the awesome and legendary pearls of the South Pacific are most frequently
found over a wide area, stretching from the Cook Islands, eastward through Tahiti and on to the Tuamotu Archipelago and the Gambier Islands in French Polynesia. Typically, they are harvested on pearl farms located in shallow island reefs, islets, and the lagoons of these regions. 
     The Tahitian pearl oysters can be incredibly large, weighing as much as 10 pounds and stretching to 12 inches across and occasionally even larger and heavier. Although Tahitian pearls can be white, usually, they are desired for their stunning dark iridescent colors. And although mostly dark, they range in color from very light white to a striking silvery greenish-blue to an iridescent charcoal, with most pearls being a kaleidoscope of peacock hues and lusters that tend to visually adapt to the clothing colors surrounding them. 
     These amazing beauties are highly sought-after and referred to as peacock or as peacock green, because of their greenish-blue color, an almost exact match to the iridescent feathers of a peacock. Tahitian pearls that are truly in the ‘black’ range of color are among the most beautiful pearls in the world and are extremely rare. 
     Most Tahitian pearls typically have more of a drop shape than a round shape and vary in size from 8 to 18 mm. But in the world of Tahitian pearls, even the more common shapes and colors are highly sought-after and considered to be unique and very desirable because of their exotic hues and deep translucent lusters.
